Hi everyone! Welcome to my first blog post for @thishouse5000. I’m so excited to have you all here! I thought I would start blogging because instagram captions just aren’t enough for me to really be able to explain our design process. So here we are, let’s get right into my most asked topic…our bed!
Why did I commission a cane bed? Why did my husband take that commission seriously? The answer is simple, there aren’t any beds like this, even close to this, available for purchase in Canada. Alllllll the nice beds are in America, so I said, OKAY, let’s make a bed. By ‘let’s’ I meant, can you please do it, and he did it. The beautiful handmade cane bed you see above is ours.
First of all, the design. We copied the Marte bed by Urban Outfitters. I fell in love with the stunning cane headboard, and that was that, I had my mind made up. We chose poplar wood, because I loved the light colour, and its durable. The cane webbing you can buy in sheet form from Lee Valley. We spent a couple hours going over all the measurements for a queen size bed, mulled over the height of the headboard and kept referring back to the suggested measurements for the Marte bed online. Once we had a blueprint, my husband went to work. Below are some pictures of how the bed came together.
A lot of people are impressed with Mr. Handyman’s craftsmanship, and I am too! Some of you have said ‘why doesn’t he quit his day job and open a bed making business.’ As much as he would loooove that, it took like 50 hours to make this bed, so we’d have to sell each one for a very pretty penny (lol). Anyway Mr. Handyman has a lot of other projects on the go as of now, so a career change is definitely on hold. Below are some photos of the bed before we got our foam mattress.
All in all, the bed turned out beautifully. I was so grateful that my hubby took me seriously, and put in the work, even though he was very cramped in our backyard shed to make this happen for me. I feel as though this is by far the most special piece in our house, and is a focal point of inspiration to you guys. Hope you enjoyed my first blog, please comment with ideas on what to write about next!
xoxo
